“Queer Antiquity” is a multidisciplinary research-based art series. It examines gender from both ancient and modern perspectives and finds gaps where a more inclusive lens could provide insight into where similar experiences might be hiding. This series questions the accepted cisgender norms common in the study of the ancient world by digging into the ways art and literature tell stories of a shared yet overlooked human experience. The figures depicted within the paintings are simultaneously statues, humans, representations of groups of people, personifications of feelings, and individuals with experiences. They transcend the need for labels and ultimately become something that defies categorization.
