About

Sarah (Avery) Schoenberger is an emerging queer artist with a Bachelor of Arts degree in both Studio Arts and Classics (Ancient Greece and Rome). This combination gives their art a unique perspective, as they draw inspiration from ancient civilizations and a visual language from early Baroque sources and apply that to their fascination with the human form. Although Avery currently prefers to work with oil paint for the majority of their art, their interest in old and traditional mediums began at a young age with experiments in silverpoint, and more recently, they have been drawn to learning the art of mezzotints. With every piece, Avery adds their unique point of view to the long history of artistic mediums and visual languages, paying their respects to what was, while pushing forward into reimagining what new stories these techniques can tell.

Avery’s art has been displayed in numerous locations at the University of Pittsburgh, including the Cathedral of Learning (Classics Department), Frick Fine Arts Building, Pitt Astrophysics Department, and Hillman Library. Their work has also been published in the Harvard University Undergraduate Classics journal, Persephone.

Avery is currently a member of the DC Arts Center and The Art League.
